Self Diagnostic

Sometimes your vehicle can misbehave at the most inappropriate times, such as when
we are not open, or perhaps you are a 'hands-on' person who likes to access the problem
before you bring it to a specialist diesel centre such as Highway Diesel Service.

If this is the case, this section is for you. Here are a few common problems, and steps you can take yourself. Of course, if you are not confident or you are unsure then you should contact Highway Diesel Service for specific professional advice. This information is given on the basis, that if you decide to undertake your own assessment of a problem using the information provided below that there will be NO legal recourse on Highway Diesel Services.

Fuel Leaks:
WARNING - Never feel for fuel leaks by using your hands. The high pressures developed in a common rail fuel injection system can lead to injury or even death.

Using a torch or lead light you can try to locate the source of the diesel fuel leak, however the engine bay will most probably need to be cleaned down first.

Most leaks are from the fuel injection pump itself, and fuel will be seen running of the bottom of the pump. Unfortunately, diesel injection pump leaks are not something that can be repaired without specialised tooling and training. Please phone us and let our friendly staff quote you on repair or the availability of exchange pumps.

Other leaks that could be present could be from leak off rail and/or low pressure fuel lines. If you can locate the source of the leak, please call our friendly staff and they can advise you on the best course of action.

Hard to Start:
This is a common problem and there are far too many possibilities to list on this website. However, what can be a great help for our staff in diagnosing and solving the problem for you over the phone is if we have accurate information. For instance, can you determine:

Whether the hard starting is when the engine is hot, or when the engine is cold.

Does the engine turn over slowly when cranking

Does it help the engine to start if you glow it several times before starting

Any other particular circumstance's such as when parked on a hill etc

Believe it or not, these simple self-assessment questions enable us to more accurately diagnose your situation and possibly solve the problem over the phone.
